Currently, electrophysiological disorders of the heart (such as sudden cardiac death) are the major health concerns in most countries including Thailand. These cardiac disorders have caused tremendous emotional and financial burden on families and countries that need to be solved urgently. To prevent and eliminate these disorders, basic research is essential to guide clinical interventions to these health problems.

In the past few decades, our understanding on the mechanisms of these abnormalities has been rapidly progressing due to the advance development of modern technology in electrophysiology such as patch clamping and cardiac mapping. In Thailand, the number of investigators who perform basic and clinical research in electrophysiology of the heart is growing. However, the gap between basic and clinical research is still large and needed to be tighten so that better treatment and prevention of these disorders can be achieved.

The necessity of having an advanced research center dedicated to the investigation on cardiac electrophysiology at the Faculty of Medicine, Chiang Mai University was initiated in early 2003. Since then, interdepartmental collaborations among staff and investigators who are interested in this field have formed. Incoming educational grant supports from both domestic and overseas have also played a major role in making the idea possible. On March 31, 2005 the Faculty of Medicine, Chiang Mai University announced the establishment of the "Cardiac Electrophysiology Research and Training (CERT) Center". It will serve as both a research facility and the training center for those who are working on the cardiac electrophysiology research, focusing on the management of cardiac rhythm.
