Cardiac Catherization & Electrophysiology Unit

The Cardiac Electrophysiology Unit studies cardiac performance in vivo and in vitro using clinically relevant models. Defibrillation efficacy and ventricular fibrillation inducibility are studied. Cardiac performance is assessed using PV-loop measurements. Cardiac myocytes are isolated and advanced imaging techniques are used to investigate calcium transients. Patch clamp techniques are used to study membrane channel kinetics.

Neuro-Electrophysiology Unit

The Neuroelectrophysiology Unit addresses research questions focused on the brain in mice and rats. The Unit employs extracellular recording techniques and behavior assessment tools such as the Morris water maze.

Neurocardiology Unit

The Neurocardiology Unit evaluates the physiological effects of vagal nerve stimulation on heart performance under conditions of extreme stress such as ischemia reperfusion injury.

Molecular Biology Unit

The Molecular Biology Unit is critical to the investigation of underlying mechanisms of action in disease. Intracellular signaling pathways can be explored in detail to unravel the complexity of physiological processes. Cardiac tissues are first collected, and myocytes are isolated to evaluate the behavior of cellular components, cell membrane channels, and certain intracellular organelles, such as mitochondria. Specific instruments employing laser fluorescence imaging are used to assess mitochondrial reactive oxygen species production, swelling and membrane depolarization. Protein-level analytical methods include Western Blotting using gel electrophoresis, and biomarker assessment using ELISA and HPLC technology.
